A few weeks ago we wrapped up a series called The Voice [That Matters]: How To Hear God’s Voice.  Here, here!  for somewhat cheesy titles.  At least everyone knew what “The Voice” was, so the name of the series drew them in a bit.

It was important to us to cover this topic well, so we took five weeks and incorporated both regular teaching/speaking time with small groups time.  The small groups are great tools for getting the students to interact with the material on a deeper level.  I don’t have stats for this, but I think that deeper interaction leads to higher retention of the material.

Week 1 – I spoke this week to introduce the material and share a few principles about God’s voice.  Namely, that He still speaks today, that His voice is powerful, but can be quiet as well, and that his voice leads us.  We also discussed why we want to hear his voice and some of the benefits of it.
Scriptures: Psalm 23:3-9, 1 Kings 19:11-12, John 10:3-4

Week 2 – This week, we illustrated how life’s distractions can make it harder to hear God’s voice using a group activity.  I also discussed a few of the ways that we can hear God’s voice in our life: the Bible (duh!), corporate settings like church or bible study, and other people in your life like friends, family, mentors, etc.  Whatever you think you hear should always line up with the Word.
Scriptures: II Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 119:105, Proverbs 27:9,

Week 3 – We had great small group discussions this week led by our volunteer leaders.  These discussions reviewed what we talked about the first two weeks and gave the students opportunities to apply what we’ve been talking about to their own lives.
Scriptures: Psalm 32:8, Colossians 3:1-2

Week 4 – Nancy hears God’s voice like not many people do, so I was excited when she wanted to speak in this series as well.  She took on some big topics – hearing from the Holy Spirit, and how to amplify God’s voice through meditation and fasting.  She ended with a challenge to the students to choose and do one of five suggested activities that week to help them hear God’s voice more clearly.
Scriptures: John 10:27, Matthew 25:23, 1 Thessalonians 5:19

Week 5 – We wrapped the series with another small group discussion to let the students work through the significant material from Week 4.  What do they understand now about the Holy Spirit?  What did they try this week?  What have they heard from God?  How are they going to live differently now that they know how to hear God’s voice?
Scriptures: John 10:27, 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (review)

All in all, great series, and an important one for our students to have.  They live in a world filled with voices telling them a myriad of things – they need to be able to distinguish God’s voice and follow it.

Question: What are some other good working titles for a series about hearing God’s voice in your life and knowing His will?
