– When making your budget, keep in mind this principle: The more you sacrifice, the faster you reach your goal.  Your sacrifice goes up, your speed goes way up.  Use this to your advantage when reaching short-term goals like getting out of debt or building an emergency fund.  Get intense!  It’s not forever.

– Your budget needs to have a place where you can keep track of how much you spent each month.  Make it an extra column on your spreadsheet, or just write it it in a different color next to your budgeted amount.  That way you have a record so you can see how you did.

– If you’re into numbers and your spouse is not, don’t make the discussion over the budget into a convention.  It’s not a weekend retreat, it’s a meeting.  30 minutes, tops.
