I talk with a lot of entrepreneurs and creatives that have really good ideas.  But sometimes, they don’t know how to get those products or services out to the people that could use them, or how to quickly and easily start selling those things online.

I’ll be the first to tell you: there’s a lot of options out there.  I know people who use Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy, and several others.  I’ve become big fan of Square, the credit card processor famous for the tiny “Square reader” that you can use on your phone.  Any of these will work and they all have different strengths and weaknesses.

I like Square for two reasons: 1) It’s really easy to set up, and 2) It has a simple fee structure of 2.75%.  There are no additional listing fees, no shop fees, no per-item fees or transaction fees; just the 2.75% for credit card processing.

In the video above I show you how you can be making sales on an online Square marketplace store in less than 15 minutes.

A few things you’ll need to prepare before you set up the store:

  • Stuff to sell and good photos of those items, or photos that could represent those services.  Square photos work best, with a resolution of at least 400 by 400px, just to be safe.
  • Your pricing structure
  • Basic descriptions for each item
  • A plan for your shipping costs – how much are you going to charge per item/order?
  • At least one header image.  Needs to be pretty big – Square recommends 2880 by 1144px.  I had some challenges with this when setting up my own store so you may have a little trial and error.
  • A physical address.  It doesn’t have to be shown online, but they need it for a basic ID check to make sure you’re a real person.

Before you can start getting money, you’ll have to provide your tax ID number and link a bank account using the account number and your bank routing number so they can send you your money!

I hope the screencast helps you get started doing something you love to do!  Square is a great option for selling online.  Questions about the setup or Square itself? Put them in the comments section below!
